- SOURCE NOTES FOR JOHN W. KING: " Gone to Georgia" Jackson and Gwinnett Counties and their
Neighbors in the Western Migration by William C. Stewart, page # 37.
Still another John King married in Oglethorpe County, GA,( license ) February 15, 1817 Lucy Jordan ( See
No. 207, Part 3 ). This John is said ( John Martin Dombhart, History of Walker Co., AL ) , 1937. p. 251-252) to have been a descendant of William and Mary ( Woodson)King of North Carolina, to have been a member of General Andrew Jackson's staff in the War of 1812, and to have been a cousin of William
Rufus King, vice president in the administration of President Pierce. He entered land in Walker County in 1822 and erected a grist mill. Among their children were William R., Thomas Jordan and John King. Thomas Jordan King was born in St. Clair, AL Nov. 2, 1820 near Ashland, served in the Confederate
Army, and afterward engaged in the milling business. Dombhart says his father John was alive at this period but the 1830 census of Walker County shows Lucy King as a widow aged 30-39, with four sons. No other King was enumerated there in 1830 and in 1840, only Lucy and James King, aged 50-59, wo was shown in the 1850 as born in Tennessee in 1783. In 1850, Lucy was shown, aged 50, with her son Thomas, aged 29, John, 22, and others. The only William King enumerated in Walker County, in 1850 was born in Georgia in 1812 if his age is given correctly. There were two Thomas Kings and a John King in St. Clair County in 1820. The Vanns of St. Clair County, among the forebears of Will Rogers, also were allied with Kings from North Carolina ( See Mrs. C.P. McGuire, Sr., Records of St. Clair County, pages
66-68). Clarence E. King, son of V.S. King, born in Gwinnett County, GA about 1878, moved with his parents to Cullman County, AL ( formed from Walker County ) in 1888 ( Carl Elliott, Annals of Northwest Alabama, v.2, p.26). Benjamin Jordan, who died in Wilkes County, GA, prior to September 25, 1791, left a daughter Lucy. ( Will Book GG, p.349). Others of the family enumerated in Georgia in 1820 were John ( no.653) of Gwinnett County; John and William of Hall County; Sarah of Clarke County; William of Habersham County; Robert of Elbert County, and Ann, ELisha, John (2) and Thomas of Washington County. Among marriages in the area was that of William Bush and Joicy King, Dec. 25, 1806 in
Franklin County.
