    • SOURCE NOTES FOR MARIA NUSS OSSLER:
      Email from Gillin@cni-usa.com (Linda Ossler ) 6/6/01

Did you know if she went by Emma or Frances? I wouldn't be surprised to find a different first name. These Germans
that I have been researching wenty by their first, middle and even 3rd names at various times. If we are talking of the same person ( hope we are ) she was known as Emma Sheppherd and lived with her widowed mother Mary ( she went by this quite often ) and half-sister Louise Ossler at 124 Frank Street, Adrian, Michigan in 1894. She is listed as age 12. Census
was done June 16, 1894, so she was either born in 1881 or 1882 depending on her birthday. Maria's occupation was listed as " Washwoman ". Maria lived with her daughter Kathryn Ossler Bradish in 1920 according to the 1920 Census. All I know is that Emma is the daughter of Maria Nuss Ossler Shepard and Leonard Shepard. Family name depending on records,
census taker spellings are Shepard, Shephard, Schappert, Schepherd, Scheppard, Sheppard. Maria is buried as Mary Shepherd.

Here is the story of Maria. She is named Anna Maria, daughter of Johann Peter and Ursula Nuss. She was born somewhere in Prussia in 1842. She had a sister Margarethe and another sister ( or a daughter of Margarethe ) named Anna Maria age 2 at the time. They all came to the United States in 1852. No records on the second Anna Maria anywhere, so probably died before they came to Michigan. Or the 2nd Anna Maria could have lived, but was married before 1870 and didn't show up on the census because of that. Who Knows? Johann and Ursula could very well have had a son Matthias Nuss born in about 1855 in New York. The reason why I think this is because the family did disembark in New York and I find Matthias and his whole family ( wife and kids ) in Lenawee County on the 1900 and 1920 Censuses. Matthias and family are also all buried in the same cemetery as Johann and Ursula.

Maria married George Adam/Adam Ossler in 1860. He died in 1878. Margarethe was married to Leonard Shepard either in Germany or in New York, as son John was born in New York.. She died in 1879, only months after Adam. Eight days before Adam died, Adam and Maria's infant daughter Rosa ( age 3 months ) died. Rosa had a twin sister Louise that lived into adulthood. In August of 1879, Maria married Leonard. They had Emma in/about 1881 or 1882, Leonard died in 1889. About a month later, Maria gave birth to a stillborn daughter. Maria lived until 1925. The Nuss family was Catholic; I am assuming, as the parents are buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Adrian, Michigan.
Leonard is buried there also. Adam Ossler was Lutheran. he is buried in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Adrian, which abuts St. Joseph's Cemetery. Now Maria is buried next to Adam at St. John's. Margarethe is buried with Leonard at St. Josephs. One of Maria and Adams children married a Catholic. Her husband is buried at St. Josephs but she is buried in St. Johns. I know Leonard had a mother named Emma, born in/about 1798. I know this as she was living with Leonard and Margarethe in 1870 ( on Census )Leonard and Margarethe also had children. I can't find records for them anywhere yet because, given all the different spelllings to check and Shepard in various forms is such a common name,
I can see why. Census takers handwriting on the 1870 Census was kind of hard to read, but this is what I think I see; John ( age 17 ), Aaron ( or Adam ) age 15, James ( age 13 ); Peter ( age 12 ); Samuel or Leonard ( age 3 ); Rosa ( age 1 ). Maria also had many children with Adam Ossler from which I descend. So when Maria married Leonard, they combined families. A story was passed down from Kathryn Bradish Ossler to her descendents that she and the other kids from Maria's first marriage were mistreated and often had to sleep in rooms with no heat, while Leonards kids slept in heated rooms.
Leonard Shepard was also from Prussia, but again, I dont' know where. Let me know what you have on Emma/Frances. I have a sister Catherine.

      Linda Ossler Email: 6/26/04 ( gillin5@ticon.net )
So, where was Alice born in 1906? My guess would be Toledo, as in 1909 in the Memories of Lenawee County ( pub,
1909 ) Emma's mother was said to be living with a daughter in Toledo, Ohio. I know where the rest of Maria's girls were living at the time and they were not in Toledo, so it had to be Emma. About this same time, Maria's debts to various store owners were written off. I have the court record and it states she had moved in 1910. She's back in Michigan living with her daughter, Kathryn. What's weird, I can't find Henry and Emma in the 1910 or 1920 Censuses. Have been doing all sorts of various spellings of the name and still no luck.
Need to let her know that he was going by William at that time.
