    • SOURCE NOTES FOR HUGH McCAIN:

The following McCain information was obtained at the Sampford University Research Room, apparently put there by James W. McCain, P.O. Box # 502, Crowley, Louisiana 70526 ( 1977 ).

It is thought that the original Scottish-Irish immigrant, who came from Antrim County, Ireland, settled in Pennsylvania, married into a Hamilton family, and lived in the " Marsh Creek Settlement" which comprised an area centered about Gettysburg in present Adams County ( 1800 ), had previously been York ( 1749),
Lancaster ( 1729 ) and Chester, the original county. Hugh McCain is thought to have been a son who was born in Pennsylvania and who later left there, may have stayed for a short time in Augusta County, VA,
and finally settled south of Waxhaw, North Carolina, in what was first Anson County, was included in the
Mecklenburg County created in 1840. No definite records has so far been found on the parents.

      Doubtful Pennsylvania Marriage Records list:
Alexander McKeen to Sarah Hamilton ( 1728 )
Hugh McKeen to Mary Hamilton ( 1730 )

If true, one of these couples could have been the parents of Hugh McCain, and it is noted that the names
of Alexander and Hamilton, in addition to Hugh, are to be found in abundance among the descendants. However, since the oldest son was John, that name should also be considered as a possible father's
name. ( There was also a John in the " Marsh Creek Settlement " ).

( Hugh McCain married his second wife, Jane Pickens Davis, sometime after 1790 from all indication,
Eleanor Nutt was mother of all the children ).

WFT estimates marriage 1790 or after.
