  • Notes
    • Genealogy of Elisha Asa Ridley
Compiled by Charlotte Ridley Traylor 1996: ( Have copy in my possession )

Very little is know about Elisha prior to his enlistment in the Florida-Indian War 1838. We know from the
Military Records of Ales ( Alexander ) Ridley that their parents died when they were small boys and their
family records were destroyed. However, we will continue our search and hopefully, someone will find
the answer to the unsolved mysteries of ELISHA ASA RIDLEY

William Ridley II, was born about 1783 in Burk County, North Carolina. He is the son of the immigrant William Ridley who was born in England and Jane Pursley who was born in Ireland and married in Burk
County, North Carolina. William Ridley II married Ann Mary SMITH on 6 July 1802 in Rutherford County, NC. From the family history of James Pursley and Jane McMahan we find that William Ridley and Ann Mary ( Smith ) Ridley later settled in White County, Tennessee. However, we have not located them in White County, Tenneesee.
William Ridley II and Ann Mary Smith Ridley issued six (6 ) children and possibly others.
At this time we have no documented proof that Ales, Charles and Elisha are the sons of William and Ann Mary( SMITH ) Ridley. However, family historians have searched the Ridley history for the past twenty years or more and they agree the facts are so strong, this has to be. The facts are:
      1. We know that Ales was born ca 1806 in North Carolina and Charles was born ca 1807 in North or South Carolina. At this time no other Ridley family was found in North Carolina. Since the U.S. Census is taken each ten years, Ales and Charles would not be in the 1800 Census, and by 1810 Census, William Ridley II and Ann Mary (Smith) Ridley had already left North Carolina.
      2. Ales Price Ridley named his first son WILLIAM as his second son WARREN, possibly for his two older brothers. In the history of " James Pursley-Jane McMahan" printed January 1982 ( James and Jane Pursley are the maternal grandparents of William Ridley II) William and Ann Mary Ridley named their first two sons WILLIAM and WARREN. After Ales Price's son William died at the age of five years, Ales named his next born son WILLIAM.
      3. Ales Price had a daughter named POLLY SMITH RIDLEY. Polly is a nick-name for Mary, indicating the name Polly Smith Ridley was associated with Ann Mary Smith Ridley.

As to what happened to William Ridley II and Ann MAry ( Smith ) Ridley and their children after they left North Carolina, we can only speculate at this time. We know Elisha was born in Kentucky. We believe that after William and Ann Mary's daughter Jane was born, Ann Mary died, possibly in Kentucky and William married a MARGARET MAXWELL on 25 December 1818 in Wayne County, Kentucky, they had a son, JAMES, born 27 May 1818 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee and James Ridley married a Miss Shumate. We believe that after William II died, Margaret indentured his sons Ales, Charles and Elisha.
      We will continue our search.
