  • Notes
    • Notes for Elisha Asa RIDLEY:
was born on 18 Juy 1809 or 1812 in Kentucky. Elisha's grave marker reflects that he was born in the year of
1812, however, in 1892 Elizabeth Ridley filed a Declaration for Widow's Pension and gives his age as 73
seventy-three years at the time of his death, 15 March 1880. Using these figures, we find his birth may have been
      1809.
Elisha came south in the early 1830's with his two brothers ALES PRICE RIDLEY and CHARLES MARTIN
RIDLEY. Elisha settled in Stevenson, Jackson, AL and his brothers settled in Franklin, Heard County, Georgia.

At this time there is no positive proof these three men are the sons of WILLIAM RIDLEY II and Ann Mary
SMITH who were married 6 July 1802 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. However, research has found
that only one RIDLEY family was living in North Carolina at the time of Ales and Charles birth ( 1806/1807 ) and
that was Williams and Ann Mary RIDLEY. This information along with other researched information lends a strong possibility. ( see William RIDLEY II ).

Elisha enlisted in the Florida-Indian War and was mustered in 12 March 1838 at Fort Payne, AL. He was a Private in Captain Gautts Company, Alabama Militia, under the leadership of Captain Harry Rogers. He was mustered-out 22 July 1838 at Fort Payne, AL. Elisha recieved a land warrant for ( 40 ) fourty acres of land for his service.

On 8 September 1838 ELISHA ASA RIDLEY and ELIZABETH ANN DAME were married in Jasper,
Marion County, Tennessee by Daniell Rolins, Justice of the Peace. Elizabeth is the daughter of John DAME, Sr. and Elizabeth OYLER of Jasper, Tennessee.

In the year of 1892, Elizabeth Ridley, on her affidavit for widow's pension, described Elisha this way: " He was blue eyed, fair skin and dark hair and about six feet in height. At the time of our marriage, he resided near Jasper, TN for seven years, then we moved to near Bridgeport, AL, where we have resided ever since his death."

Elisha and Elizabeth Ridley and their children settled in Stevenson, Jackson Co., AL between 1845 and 1848.
The Ridley land is located across the Tennessee River, directly across from the Widow's Creek T.V.A. Steam
Plant, on top of Sand Mountain, extinct name of the Post Office was Cameronville. In 1875, due to failing health and love for his wife, Elisha made a Deed of Gift to Elizabeth for four hundred forty one ( 441 ) acres of land. ( In those days, women generally did not own land. ) The land was usually inherited by the eldest son. Elizabeth deeded each of their children a home site. The remaining lands was, after her death, sold by auction. Mr. R.A. Williamson was the buyer and to this day his ancestor, Mr. Joe John Williams, lives on and works the RIDLEY farm. Elisha also owned lands around Shaw, AL, now extinct, where Elizabeth was living in August 1892.

Elisha and Elizabeth Ann are buried on their farm near the house. Elisha's grave marker reflects that he was born 18 July 1812 and died 15 March 1882. Elizabeth's marker reflects her birth to be 27 March 1812 and her death to be 7 May 1903. However, widow's pension No 513 of Elizabeth Ann Ridley declared her age to be seventy-three years, have been born 25 March 1819.

Very little is know about Elisha prior to his Enlistment in the Florida-Indian War in 1838. We know from the Military Records of Ales Ridley that their parents died when they were small boys and their family records were destroyed.
