    • Ridley-Genealogy of Elisha Asa Ridley by Charlotte Ridley Traylor @ 1996

In Spiller's Family Bible and on his Social Security Card he is listed as " Willie Spillar Ridley". In the 1900 census of Jackson County, Alabama, he is listed as " William P. Ridley" ( at this time he was twenty-three years of age, living with his parents). On his marriage record he is listed as " W.S. Ridley". Emaline Parton Ridley, wife of Charles Martin Ridley II, ( Spillar's uncle ), give his name as " William Pollien Spiller Ridley". We have found no record of the name Pollien and except for the 1900 census, no record of the initial "P". Since the name William was a very prominent name among the early Ridley's, this is most likely. However, Mildred Ridley Bryan, daughter of Spiller, said his friends usually called him " UNCLE DOCK" and his family called him " SPILLER".

William Spiller Ridley was born 25 November 1876 in Stevenson, Jackson County, Alabama. He was the first of four children born to John Bunyon Ridley and Frances Eleanor ( MARSHALL) Ridley of Stevenson, Alabama.

After Spiller's mother died his father married Matilda J. Brown on the 7th January 1892 and they issued five daughters.

On the 7th October 1906, William " WILLIE" Spillar Ridley and Ellender "ELLEN" Ann Maxwell were married by W.R. Gross, Justice of the Peace, at the home of Ellen's parents, Hugh P. and Sara
HAWK Maxwell of Jackson County, Alabama. Ellen was born on the 6 October 1887 in Jackson Co, AL
and died the 30th of July 1970 in Trion, Chattoga County, Georgia. ( See Maxwell-Ridley Chart #8).
Spiller's trade was farming, saw-milling and blacksmith. He also enjoyed making wood crafts.

Spiller suffered with severe respiratory problems and combined with the conditions of our country at the time, due to the economy of our nation and the hardships of farming, he was unable to support his large family in the early 1930's. The older children had to leave school and seek employment. Lillie, John, Ben, and Mildred settled in Trion, Georgia. Later, Spiller and his two youngest children, Vivian and Margaret, went to live with his daughter Mildred and her husband Kelly Bryan of Trion, where Spiller spent his remaining years. Ellen lived with the other children and helped with their families. Ellen also did sewing for her family and friends. As long as she lived, Ellen made beautiful quilts and gave them to most of her family members. On the 23rd of July 1943 Spiller Ridley died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Kelly Bryan, in Summerville, Chattoga Co., GA. Spiller and Ellen are buried in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Flat Rock, Jackson Co, AL.

In a note I recieved in 1993 from Ralph Ridley of Bridgeport, AL he states " A few years back I had the priviledge of talking with a retired Postmaster from Fabius, Alabama. He had the greatest respect for Spiller and considered him a
"very fine man ". William Spiller Ridley and Ellender Ann ( Maxwell ) Ridley issued nine (9) children.
