    • SOURCE NOTES:
David McCurdy ( Macurdy ) was born in 1709 of Scotch-Irish heritage and the first generation to come to America. He came to America when he was quite young with his cousin James, and located in Westmoreland County, PA. He was born in Cavan Parish, Ireland: son of James McCurdy ( Macurdy )
and Jerusha Murray. He settled in Westmoreland Co., PA where he married Susan Madden about 1730
from Philadelphia, PA. David McCurdy and his sons were in the Revolutionary War. David was a
Revolutionary soldier, although at that time he had passed his three score years; his sons were also
soldiers in the same war. He himself was frequently with Col. George Washington. At one time, while
riding with General Washington, through that part of Pennsylvania claimed by Virginia, they were chased
by Indians and both had to ride for their lives. After the war David located near Carlisle, PA. In 1787,
he with his son John's family, formed part of a colony that started to seek new homes in Georgia. They
settled in Madison County and organized New Hope Church. David died in 1833 at the extreme old
age of 124 years at Westmoreland, PA. Three of his sons never mairred. Robert married and remained
in Pennsylvania. The above details are verified in a letter written by Mary McCurdy of Rathlin, Ireland
in 1810 to her brother John, then residing on the Guinea Coast of Africa. The entire letter can be found at:
